Deli Meat (Not Unprocessed Meats) Linked to Heart Disease and Diabetes
by Dr. Michael D Berglund

Not to sound arrogant, but they’re finally getting there. I can’t believe that it’s taken this long for researchers to actually separate real meat from the processed and cured meats.

Now the challenge is (and I don’t know the answer) whether it’s actually the meat that causes diabetes or that every hot dog, sausage, salami, pastrami is eaten on WHITE BREAD or with (white flour based) PASTA. Can the researchers separate these out? Let’s look at people who eat the processed meat WITH the bleached flour and compare to those who eat it without? That study will probably come down the pipe in another 30 years. Course, then the next study will look at the difference with meats from grass fed beef compared to grain/corn fed penned up cattle.

If you read the article, you will also see that they have been believing the “meat is evil” argument so long, that they backtrack and warn people against eating a steak every night. I have been saying this for years, meat is not the evil it was made out to be. High fructose corn syrup, refined white sugar, white flour, and even pasteurized milk are the culprits for most of the diseases in the US. We should be eating meat, veggies, fruit, nuts, seeds, and legumes. We eat WAY WAY WAY too many grains.

But it’s going to take a while before we see that. It will mess up our pyramid and mess up our country’s farming industry.

The following clips were from the article from www.webmd.com entitled:
Processed Meat Linked to Heart, Diabetes Risks

A new study shows eating processed red meat — such as hot dogs, bacon, sausage, and cold cuts — is linked to increased risks of heart disease and diabetes.

But the study, published in Circulation, shows no such link for unprocessed red meat.

Eating unprocessed beef, pork, or lamb was not linked to a higher risk for heart disease and diabetes.

Eating one serving a day of processed meat — or the equivalent of a single hot dog or two slices of salami — was associated with a 42% increased risk for heart disease and a 19% increased risk for diabetes in the study, conducted by researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health.
    Read more at www.webmd.com

Over and over again, drug companies screw up. This case of Johnson & Johnson is just one of many examples. All that happens with these companies is a slap on the wrist… fines. The drug companies just pass those costs on to consumers and insurance companies.

Now, if this was a vitamin company or supplement or herb, the FDA would ban it. A single inquiry and it would be over. Why? The FDA and Big Pharma are linked at the hip and they work together. What is also mentioned in this article is: “Since the April 30 recall, the FDA has received hundreds of reports of complications with J&J products, including seven deaths…”

Motrin doesn’t save lives, however, I guess it does kill people.

If a single person kills 7 people, he or she is serial killer. If it’s a company, that’s just Big Pharma doing the business of “saving lives.”

Right…

Cut from: www.msnbc.msn.com
-FDA docs: J&J knew of problems with Motrin in 2008
-Johnson & Johnson learned of potential problems with its Motrin formula in 2008, but instead of issuing a recall, hired an outside contractor which began buying up the products
-Some of the medicines recalled contained tiny particles of metal
-Sharfstein laid out J&J’s repeated violations of quality and manufacturing procedures, which have resulted in three recalls in the last eight months.

Heartburn Drugs Cause Osteoporosis
May 26, 2010 2:36pm by Michael D Berglund

Functional medicine doctors and nutritionists have been telling patients this for years. Why? We knew that the body needs stomach acid in order to properly absorb minerals and break down proteins. It’s why TUMS is a very bad form of calcium, because it neutralizes stomach acid thereby reducing the likelihood of being absorbed. For this same reason, anemia is quite common because iron is one of those minerals that needs stomach acid to be absorbed.

The terrible part of this news story is that they reveal that patients should not be on an acid reducing medication for longer than three 14 day bouts per year. That amounts to 42 days of these drugs for a 365 day year (about 15%). We all know people that “HAVE” to take these medications every day. It’s a dilemma.

My approach is always very simple, figure out what is causing the stomach’s sensitivity to acid and then take care of that. There’s that old doctor joke that says “doctor doctor it hurts when i raise my arm” and the doctor responds with “stop raising your arm.” Prilosec, Nexium, Prevacid, and Aciphex all function the same way. Doctor, doctor… it hurts when I secrete stomach acid. Only to have the doctor reply, “here take this and you won’t secrete stomach acid any more.” Inherently, the mind goes to that place: wasn’t I secreting that stomach acid for a reason?

Hmmm.

Amplify’d clips below were from www.news.yahoo.com
FDA Warns of Fracture Risk With Popular Heartburn Drugs
heartburn medications such as Prevacid, Prilosec and Nexium will now carry a warning on their labels linking the drugs to a heightened risk for fractures
associated with an increased risk of fractures of the hip, wrist and spine
Nexium
Prilosec
Prevacid
Protonix
Aciphex
medicines are used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach and small intestine ulcers and inflammation of the esophagus. Over-the-counter versions of Prevacid, Prilosec and Zegerid also fall into this class of drugs.
The highest risk was seen in people taking higher doses of PPIs, or among those who took them for a year or more
Under no circumstances should over-the-counter PPIs be taken for more than three 14-day periods in a year
Read more at news.yahoo.com

The truth, I believe we will find, is that refined carbohydrates are responsible for a great deal of the elevated blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and diabetes that we see in the US.

I have posted this before, but I strongly believe that if we cut out sugar, corn syrup and bleached & unbleached white flour out of diets, 10’s to 100’s of billions of dollars will be saved that are normally spent on health care in this country. Course, I assume that means a great number of hospitals will close and medicine related jobs will be lost, but we will be a healthier country.

The following was amplified from

BP Drops when Sugary Drinks Are Reduced
Cutting down on sugar-sweetened soft drinks was associated with a drop in blood pressure, researchers found.
American adults consume 28 fluid ounces a day of sugar-sweetened beverages, or some 2.3 servings, Chen and colleagues noted. But whether long-term consumption of such beverages affects blood pressure has not been investigated.
Read more at www.medpagetoday.com

This system spends so much money on useless studies. The comment that starts with “a food allergy is a very specific … response… IgE or T-cells…” is wrong. There are IgG delayed onset allergies too that don’t necessarily occur “within mines to an hour” as they state in this article. These allergies can start 6-8 hrs after consuming and may still react 3 days later. IgE allergies are easy to diagnose. I eat this and I react. It doesn’t take typically hundreds of dollars of lab testing/scratch tests. However, IgG reactions are trickier.

So now the myth of the Allergy Myth has been debunked. Huh? So does that mean a myth of a myth means truth? Sorry, couldn’t help it.

Dear Senator Glen Grothman:

I am a doctor in Kenosha that routinely treats and, subsequently, helps patients by removing certain foods from their diet. I have had cases of irritable bowel syndrome, chronic sinusitis, chronic ear infections just go away after eliminating dairy products from my patients’ diets. I find that about 70% of the people that I remove from dairy are actually able to consume raw milk products without any issues. I just recently had an infant in my office that was allergic to all formula. I had the mom try raw milk as a base for a “homemade formula”. The baby has done exceptionally well. Her symptoms have dissipated and she’s thriving on the raw milk

As a citizen of this country, I find it unconstitutional that the government is telling me what I can and cannot buy and consume. If they are concerned for my well being or my patient’s well being, then fine. Put a warning label on the milk like you do cigarettes. Isn’t it funny that we can buy cigarettes, (which are known to have a multitude of issues associated with it in addition to being extremely addictive and kill 10’s of millions of people every year) and we have alcohol related deaths which are extensive, and sugar and high fructose corn syrup (that are known to contribute to heart disease and diabetes, which cumulatively kill almost a million people each year), but we can’t buy raw milk, which people have been drinking and using for THOUSANDS of years because it might cause a few hundred people every year to get sick (which is mainly due to bad handling and not really from the actual raw cow’s milk).

We haven’t banned spinach despite having numerous people get sick from contaminated spinach. Why are we treating raw milk differently?

We’re not talking about allowing people to buy raw milk at the grocery store; this piece of legislation is to allow people like me and my patients to buy these unpasteurized dairy products from specialty places/farms. Please don’t allow the governor to cave to the “Big Dairy” lobby. Leave the local farmers alone. Let the market determine the market. I believe the legislation has in it that some criteria needs to be met to continue to be able to sell raw milk. If a farm routinely sells raw milk that makes people sick, the government should be able to deal with that individual farmer. We shouldn’t be “throwing the baby out with the bath water”.

Having raw milk and organic food, genetically unchanged grains, and grass fed beef/chicken is a right that should be protected. The grocery industry may not feel this is necessary, but the market needs to be kept open so people have a choice. The government should not be allowed to take that choice away form people.

I hope this helps you see the “other side” of this issue. I’m sure the dairy lobby has given you stats, but I’ll tell you what: if we force my patients to go back to regular pasteurized milk, they WILL be affected negatively. Please, please, pass this bill, Governor Doyle.

Will our ignorance get in the way of REAL progress? The US government has taken the stance that what we don’t know won’t hurt us. I disagree. I believe we should know everything that is in our food. I think we could go farther. If not on the label, at least on the manufacturer’s website. Tell us if the seed has been genetically modified, what strain, what pesticides and fertilizers were sprayed on the crops, what chemicals in trace amounts are used to clean the machines at the processing plant… etc I don’t think it’s asking too much that I know what specifically I am putting in my system. Our wonderful government (of the people and by the people) believes that it is asking too much for them to be honest with us. I’m sure they’re thinking we’ll make mountains out of mole hills. Hmmm. http://amplify.com/u/5zfy
